The History of WLS radio,
"MusicRadio," "The Big 89" this is a multipart history of the "Rock of
Chicago" and the station which most of us grew up with in the
midwest. Also, quite a bit of information on the special 2007
Summertime reunion of past WLS jocks and staff.

WCFL was the big competition of WLS in
the Chicagoland area. Unfortunately, it was a directional station
and the signal wasn't quite as strong in central Illinois as WLS.
Still, it was quite a powerhouse Unfortunately, the link to the
history of WCFL no longer exists, so until someone comes up with a new
one, you'll just have to look at a logo from the early to mid 70's. |
WABC
"77-WABC!" WLS' sister station in New York. Home of Dan
Ingram,
Harry Harrison and "A-Beatle-C." It also includes the weekly
playlist-music
surveys from the 60's-70's. Probably a similar playlist used by
WLS.
I remember listening to WABC on good nights in Central Illinois.

![]() WIRL, 1290-AM, Peoria was north central Illinois' TOP 40 Station. Great sight includes audio, jingles and more. All great radio stations should have a sight like this. It looks like WIRL is back with a classic country format. Check it out. |

Hall of Fame Congrats to Dick Bartley, one of the inductees
for
the 2001 Hall of Fame. Dick hosted the original "Solid Gold
Saturday
Night" when WDNL(D-102) aired the show from it's very beginning.
D-102 was one of the original affiliates of this classic oldie show
from
the early 80's.

The UHF Morgue
The UHF Morgue
is a facinating website about the demise of many TV stations over the
years. We tend to think of local TV stations as resources which
will always be there, but that isn't always the case. Even though
we don't hear or see much about the business failures of stations , it
does occur. Witness the number of stations which are now under
the umbrella's of other stations(duopolies). Most of the time it
is because of a failure of a non-network, or small network stations in
the market which because of operating costs, adverstising competition,
and small audiences just couldn't make it on their own. In the
50's and 60's if new owners couldn't be found to transfuse new life and
business stablility into a failing staions, it just died.

This is a great piece on a station I
remember being pretty exited about when it was on the air in
1969.
Not many people remember this Jacksonville ABC station, and no wonder,
it was only on the air for a year and a half. It broadcast from
the tallest tower in the US at the time, with almost 5-million
watts!!
Jerry Slabe began his TV career here. A fascinating piece of TV
History,
right in our own back yard!

Dumont
Television Network Long before Fox, UPN and WB,
there
was another TV network. WCIA-TV was an affiliate, back in the
50's.
Jackie Gleason was a Honeymooner on Dumont, before going to CBS.
Interesting Vintage TV site.

Drive in Theaters were a part of my growing up in Taylorville, as many movies were seen from my parent's back seat early on, then to my high school years. Here's a couple of sites I've found to quite interesting. I didn't know there were four separate drive ins in Danville. Also be sure and check out the history on the Frisina Drive Inn in Taylorville. One unique thing about it was the outside seating section in front of the snack bar....and the very large playground down in front of the screen.
