  •  Turner Classic Movies TCM  is the greatest!  If I had to choose one cable/satellite channel, this would be it!!

I've got three XM receivers which go between my car and home!  I highly recommend it!  My favorite channels are the decades(40's, 60's and 70's), Watercolors(Smooth Jazz), Deep Tracks(Classic AOR), Comedy channels and Classic Radio(164) along with Air America(164).  I'm in the car about 2 hours a day, and it's great company!

Historical Broadcast Sites

Reel to Reel
ReelRadio.com  this one is a "must listen!!"  If you grew up with classic top 40 radio, check out the WLS audio selections, especially the ones with Larry Lujack!

...and speaking of Lujack....he's back!! on the air in Chicago.  Check out this one at cyberradio!!

The History of WLS radio, "MusicRadio," "The Big 89" this is a multipart history of the "Rock of Chicago" and the station which most of us grew up with in the midwest.  Also, quite a bit of information on the special 2007 Summertime reunion of past WLS jocks and staff.

WCFL was the big competition of WLS in the Chicagoland area.  Unfortunately, it was a directional station and the signal wasn't quite as strong in central Illinois as WLS.  Still, it was quite a powerhouse  Unfortunately, the link to the history of WCFL no longer exists, so until someone comes up with a new one, you'll just have to look at a logo from the early to mid 70's.
WABC "77-WABC!"  WLS' sister station in New York.  Home of Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison and "A-Beatle-C."  It also includes the weekly playlist-music surveys from the 60's-70's.  Probably a similar playlist used by WLS.  I remember listening to WABC on good nights in Central Illinois.

(Left) The History of radio includes many years in which network radio included drama, comedy, adventure, children's shows, daytime serials as well as news.  Radio Spirits  features classic radio

The History of St. Louis Radio

WIRL, 1290-AM, Peoria was north central Illinois' TOP 40 Station.
Great sight includes audio, jingles and more.  All great radio stations should have a sight like this.  It looks like WIRL is back with a classic country format.  Check it out.

Music Radio 107.5  Here's a local Danville low, low, low power radio station's website.  I've heard him and I'll always tune in while passing through his coverage area(just a few miles).

TV Party  WOW!  At this one you can spend hours and hours...and hours checking out vintage TV programs....  I love the one about "Time Tunnel" one of my favorites...also Honey West....the Casey Casem outrage....vintage TV houses from your favorite series....Jackie Gleason Show "Picture This"....and so much more!!

Radio Hall of Fame  Congrats to Dick Bartley, one of the inductees for the 2001 Hall of Fame.  Dick hosted the original "Solid Gold Saturday Night" when WDNL(D-102) aired the show from it's very beginning.  D-102 was one of the original affiliates of this classic oldie show from the early 80's.

The UHF Morgue  The UHF Morgue is a facinating website about the demise of many TV stations over the years.  We tend to think of local TV stations as resources which will always be there, but that isn't always the case.  Even though we don't hear or see much about the business failures of stations , it does occur.  Witness the number of stations which are now under the umbrella's of other stations(duopolies).  Most of the time it is because of a failure of a non-network, or small network stations in the market which because of operating costs, adverstising competition, and small audiences just couldn't make it on their own.  In the 50's and 60's if new owners couldn't be found to transfuse new life and business stablility into a failing staions, it just died.

WJJY Website
This is a great piece on a station I remember being pretty exited about when it was on the air in 1969.  Not many people remember this Jacksonville ABC station, and no wonder, it was only on the air for a year and a half.  It broadcast from the tallest tower in the US at the time, with almost 5-million watts!!  Jerry Slabe began his TV career here.  A fascinating piece of TV History, right in our own back yard!

Dumont Television Network    Long before Fox, UPN and WB, there was another TV network.  WCIA-TV was an affiliate, back in the 50's.  Jackie Gleason was a Honeymooner on Dumont, before going to CBS.  Interesting Vintage TV site.

The Greatest Films is a site which includes links to the best films of all time!  A movie lovers favorite.

 Jerry Beck's Cartoon Research
 TV Classics
Dick Clark Productions May or may not be there.  I wish Mr. Clark the best.

Old TV Series Research your favorite classic TV shows.
Avengers One of my favorite TV shows of the late 60's....with John Steed and Emma Peel.  Now on BBC America with edits.
Dick Van Dyke Show  In how many episodes was Danville, Illlinois mentioned?
The Munsters  It was always a treat to visit the Munster's home at Universal Studios....just a few doors down from Wally and the Beav....and Dr. Welby's House.  It's now Wisteria Lane on "Desperate Housewives."
Twin Peaks  It was David Lynch's classic cult favorite....and a favorite of mine.  By the way...Bob killed Laura.
World's Earliest Television Recording Interesting early TV site.
Dwayne Hickman From the Bob Cummings Show to The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis....he's still out there.
Batman  Adam West and Burt Ward were the real Batman and Robin!
Bob Denver From Maynard G. Krebbs to Gilligan....he's still out there too.
 Dean Martin  Dino's still alive!
Yvonne Craig was born in and spent at least 3 years in Doug's home town of Taylorville.  Yvonne Craig was probably more famous for playing "Bat Girl" in the "Batman" TV series with Adam West and Burt Ward.  She also made many appearances in many "drive-in movies" of the early to mid 1960's, and in "Star Trek."  Here's her website....

Local Sites of Interest

  • The Illinois State Journal  The Springfield local newspaper.  It has more information about media in east-central Illinois than the newspapers here!
  • Taylorville Breeze-Courier    My hometown newspaper.  I remember, the publisher hated radio stations, and when it published my engagement and wedding announcement they wouldn't mention the call letters of the radio station I worked for.  My employment was simply referred to as "he works for a local radio station."   This link I dedicate to the late James Cooper.  NOTE: In order to access this site, you now need a subscription.  Geez....!
  • The Taylorville Daily News is run by the local radio stations, Miller Broadcasting Group and has just as much if not more than the local newspaper website and it's free.
  • The Decatur Herald and Review This is a link to the Decatur daily newspaper.   Melissa and I lived in Decatur during the Summer of 1979, and being that my Dad worked there at Staley's for 35 years, I was very familiar with the city.  Decatur gets a bump rap.  I found Decatur one of the friendliest, more beautiful cities in central Illinois.  I get a lot of comments from people in Champaign about how bad it smells....do the people in Champaign not smell Kraft??
  • Danville Junction Chapter N.R.H.S.  Growing up just a short distance from the Wabash Railroad and the C&IM as a kid in Taylorville trains have always been facinating.  My grade school(Hewitt) in Taylorville was between the Wabash and the C & IM.  I spent countless hours watching trains instead of paying attention to the teachers.  My great-grandfather worked the round houses in Taylorville which were located across the street from my grade school.
  •  Vermilion County Conservation District  Two of the most beautiful locations in Vermilion County as well as East-Central Illinois, Kennekuk County Park and the Forest Glen Preserve.  These two county parks are so different, in spite of the fact of being in the same county.  Check out their website.

Vermilion County Conservaton District Foundation  I'm a member of the Board of Directors of this organization which helps the local County Parks the special places they are in East Central Illinois.  Become a member today!!

Drive in Theaters were a part of my growing up in Taylorville, as many movies were seen from my parent's back seat early on, then to my high school years.  Here's a couple of sites I've found to quite interesting.  I didn't know there were four separate drive ins in Danville.  Also be sure and check out the history on the Frisina Drive Inn in Taylorville.  One unique thing about it was the outside seating section in front of the snack bar....and the very large playground down in front of the screen.

Vitro Seating   Where my brother works.  He wanted to see his name on my site....so here it is.....Larry Quick.   If you're interested in very unique restaurant seating or other fine products...
