This was a local TV
franchise which featured local hosts at the local stations. Along
with a group of preschool to early grade school kids, the hostess sang
songs, played games and taught kids to always "be a do be, don't be a

mirror, in which the hostess would see the kids watching at home.
I'm not sure who the local hostess was at this time. Research
continues. Anyone out there ever appear on Romper Room? Let
me know. The hostess for this one was probably "Miss Jean."

Actually
called "Art Linkletter's House Party" this long running CBS daytime
variety show is still the longest running daytime variety show having a
run beginning in 1952 until 1969. It was a game show, a talk
show, During the first season it was replayed on CBS radio
a half hour after it was on television. It was the show which
featured the segment "Kids Say the Darndest Things"which was also the
name of Linkletter's book which featured some of the best one liners
from the children's panel. The talent and abilities of Art
Linkletter have long been overlooked, as he, in my opinion was one of

Marichal-John Roseboro incident. Leo Durocher, Jackie Robinson
and Chris Schenkel report. (Live)
A
black
and white telecast of baseball.
|
|
Supplemental
Background:
Why did ABC air a baseball game on a weekday?? It was noted that
it was the first meeting of Marichal and Roseboro since
the"Incident."
Now, thanks to a contribution from Mike Mirnardi, a website reader here
is the story....as written by Mike:
"That
was a notorious altercation between those two players. It culminated in
Marichal of the Giants attacking
Roseboro
with a baseball bat. Marichal was a great pitcher for the SF Giants but
the viciousness of the attack is thought to have delayed his
entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame by several years. I am including
the relevant info from the Juan Marichal Wikipedia entry:
"'Marichal
is also remembered for a notorious incident that occurred on
August 22, 1965, in a game played against the Giants' arch-rival,
the
Los Angeles Dodgers. Batting against Sandy Koufax, Marichal felt
that Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro's return throws had flown too
close
to his head. Words were exchanged, and Roseboro, throwing off his
catcher's helmet and mask, rose to continue the argument. Marichal
responded by hitting Roseboro's unprotected head with his bat.
The benches cleared into a 14-minute brawl, while Giant captain Willie
Mays escorted the bleeding Roseboro (who would require 14 stitches)
back to the clubhouse. Marichal was ejected, suspended
for nine
days and fined $1,750. Roseboro filed a lawsuit, but eventually settled
out of court, supposedly for $7,000. Marichal and Roseboro would
eventually go on to become close friends, reconciling any
personal animosity and even autographing photographs of the brawl.
Many
people protested the apparently light punishment meted out, but as it
was it hurt the Giants considerably. They were in a neck-and- neck
pennant race with the Dodgers and the race was decided with only two
games to play. Marichal's nine-day suspension cost him two pitching
turns, and the Giants lost the pennant by two games.'"
"As
you can see the incident was a cause celebre' and that is why the first
meeting of the teams would be considered worthy of a network broadcast."
Thanks
to Mike Mirnardi

for NBC, this was it. It ran from 1964 to 1968. It was
replaced in 1968 by "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In." Early
episodes were in black and white. The following week during the
new season, all future episodes were in color.

Summer
Playhouse
After losing their long time housekeeper, a
magazine editor and his wife engage a Miss Bickle to replace her.
Jeanne: Jeanne Crain. John: John Vivyan. Miss Bickle: Alice
Frost.
Last show of the series. Next week: Lucille Ball
begins her new season here.
This
summer anthology series ran on CBS during the summer of 1964 and
1965. Most episodes were actually unsold pilot shows for possible
series.

"The Farmer in the Deal" The Air Force
wants to buy Grandpa Anderson's land, but Grandpa is asking for too
much money. Will: Sammy Jackson. Grandpa Anderson: Andy
Clyde. (R)
Last show of the series. Next week, "The Legend
of Jesse James," starring Christopher Jones, debuts in this time spot.
TV
version
of the play and movie, which starred Andy Griffith, Nick Adams and Don
Knots from 1958. This short lived series ran on ABC from 1964 to
1965(1 season).

Glynis-Comedy
"Keep in Cool." Glynis and Keith spend the night in a deserted
motel, where Glynis spots a murder in progress outside her bedroom
window. Glynis: Glynis Johns. Kieth: Keith Andes.
Carrie Cobb: Hope Summers. Cobb: Peter Whtney. (R)
Last
show of the series. Next week, Andy Griffith takes over this time
spot.
This
series originally ran on CBS from September to December 1963(with time
off for the Kennedy assination coverage). It was rerun during the
summer of 1965. My question, why would you name a series after
the star when no one knew who the star was?

Wendy
and Me-Comedy
When Jeff's assigned to pilot a plane to Rome,
Wendy dons a black wig and goes along as the stewardess-unknown to
Jeff. Landlord: George Burns. Wendy: Connie Stevens.
Jeff: Ron Harper. Danny: James Callahan. Bundy: J. Pat
O'Malley. Joanne Grant: Mary Jane Saunders. Customs Man: A.
G. Vatanza. (R)
Last show of the series. Next week:
"A Man Called Shenandoah," starring Robert Horton debuts in this time
slot.
It
would
have been called a ripoff of the old "Burns and Allen" show but it
starred George Burns with cute but dumb Connie Stevens. They
weren't married, but played neighbors. She was married to an
airline pilot. George narrated the series, and talked to the
camera/audience just like he did in later episodes of "Burns and
Allen." This one ran on ABC one season from 1964 to 1965.

Williams
COLOR Comedienne Phyllis Diller and trumpeter Al
Hirt join Andy, the Osmond Brothers and the Good Time Singers.
Ina culinary sketch, Phyllis shows Andy and Al how to concoct a
Brutus salad. Nick Castle Dancers. (R; 60 min.)
Ch.
24 does not colorcast.
This
version of the Andy Williams Show ran on NBC from 1962 to 1971.
Regulars included those listed above and the Dave Grusin
Orchestra. Theme song was my favorite song of all time "Moon
River" by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. Christmas episodes
included his family including his wife, the incredibly beautiful and
sexy Claudine Longet

for a replacement at the Copa Club. Kathy: Marjorie Lord.
Phil: Sheldono Leonard. Charley: Sid Melton. Bunny: Pat
Carroll. Rusty: Rusty Hamer. Linda: Angela
Cartwright. (R)
This
was
probably the last CBS airring of "The Danny Thomas Show." The
show left the air, but returned in 1970 on ABC.

Farmer's
Daughter
"Why Wait Till November?" Harassed by complicated wedding
preparations, Glen and Katy consider eloping. Katy: Inger
Stevens. Glen: William Windom. Agatha: Cathleen Nesbitt.
Justice of the Peace: Percy Helton. (R)
This
ABC
series ran from 1963 to 1966. The series was based on the 1947
movie which starred Loretta Young. Like most series if it's on
long enough ends up "jumping the shark." This series "jumped the
shark" when the wedding of the two lead characters got married in
November of the new 1965-66 season. The show lost it's
edge(if it had one to begin with) and ratings continued to
tumble. Star Inger Stevens met a tragic end when she committed
suicide a few years later.

CBS
News Special
SPECIAL COLOR Scheduled:
"Vietnam: A Day of War." Last of four programs, examining U.S.
military and diplomatic involvement in the Southeastern Asian
conflict. Correspondents Charles Collingwood, Peter Kalischer,
Bernard Kalb, Morley Safer and Murray Fromson narrate this film report
showing a day of combat in Vietnam. Cameras follow an airstrike
unit, ground troops, an aid mission in the villages and a combined
operation of U.S. and South Vietnamese troops. (60 min.)
Next week, "The Steve Lawrence Show" debuts in thsi time spot.
"CBS Reports" formerly seen at this time, moves to Tuesday, 9-10pm.
Another
of
the CBS News documentary presentations which get little or no
ratings. With the success of ABC's "Ben Casey" and to a lesser
degree 'Naked City" on NBC, CBS waved the white flag and used the time
to air relatively cheaper programming from the news department.

"A Thousand Words are Mute." Janet West, a 28 year old professor
of English, suffers a stroke that leaves her intelligence unimpared,
but damages her ability to communicate. Recovery depends partly
on the attidtudes of those around her-but most of all on her own
will. Casey: Vincent Edwards. Zorba: Sam Jaffe.
Hoffman: Harry Landers. Nurse Wills: Jeanne Bates. (R; 60
min.) Guest Cast Janet West: Pippa Scott. Prof.
George Peters: Robert Sampson. West: Tyler McVey.
Mrs. West: Harriet MacGibbon. Dr. Wagner: Elisabeth Fraser.
Playwright Allan Scott's script is based on the experiences of his wife
Laura. Pippa Scott is their daughter.
This
series was the most popular ABC series of the time runing from 1961 to
1966. The star Vince Edwards was the strong silent type, who was
discovered by Bing Crosby. It was produced by Bing Crosby
Productions(later producing "Hogan's Heroes" on CBS).

City-Drama
"C3H5(NO3) 3." Chemistry professor James Fallon hits upon
an unusual and explosive formula to solve his problem. James
Fallon: Hume Cronyn. Tom Keary: J.D. Cannon. Martha Fallon:
Doreen Lang. (60 min.)
This
syndicated off network gritty crime series was produced in New York,
running on ABC from 1958 to 1963. I assume this was shown on
WICS, WCHU and WICD probably as an opportunity to air more local paying
commercials during prime time. This policy was used many many
times on WICS over the years. That payed more than network
compensation and even though this airring probably got trounced by "Ben
Casey" on ABC, local advertisers weren't concerned with TV ratings and
simply bought time during prime time. Not a bad move for
business. It's believed that NBC was showing "The Alfred
Hitchcock Hour."
